The great writer Mark Twain once told a story about a man who searched the planet looking for the greatest general who ever lived. When he was informed that the person he was looking for had already died and gone to heaven, the man landed up at the pearly gates to search for him. Saint Peter pointed at a very average-looking guy. The man was stunned, 'This is not the greatest of all military generals. I know that bugger. He was a roadside cobbler."
Saint Peter said, "I know my friend. But if this cobbler had been a general, he would have been the greatest of them all!"
It's a cautionary tale and one that reminds us all the fallacy of dreams and passions not pursued. Because who knows, the day trader at the stock exchange could have probably been one of the greatest actors in India more famous than Amitabh Bachchan had he pursued his true calling, the software engineer coding away unknown in a small cubicle could have been the most famous music composer in India had he not gone for a stable life of servility and regular income, the HR Manager might have become the greatest artist of Modern India..the list goes on. The bottom line here is to follow your heart's desire because everyone is born with a gift - a desire to do something that he enjoys to the fullest - a desire that calls out to him the dead of night, in his waking hours, in his daydreams, in his fantasies. Ignore that at your peril because then in your old age you will have to wake up crying in the middle of the night with the question, 'Why didn't I, when I was young and when I had the time?" There are many invisible Amitabh Bachchans, RD Burmans, Deepa Mehtas, Salman Rushdies walking amongst us - the tired corporate guy in his Volkswagen stuck in the traffic jam next to you, the regular pot bellied dad walking his two children at the mall, the bored housewife getting a skin treatment at the local salon or could it be YOU!

The 10,000 Hours Theory
If you are citizen of this planet, you should have heard and even reflected about the much-bandied about 10,000 hour theory of mastery. The fact remains that it is absolutely true that you need those 10,000 hours of practice to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert - in anything. The brain needs that much of time to process a skill and strengthen the neural networks enough to create masterpieces. What is also important to remember is that the researchers of this theory also have found that beyond those 10,000 hours, any additional benefit simply tapers off. So in effect if you are a young aspiring guitarist and you pick up the guitar on the 1st of 2015, by the end of 2025, you will be as good as Joe Satriani! The fact that Joe Satriani is older or has been playing the guitar for 40 years does not matter. Those initial 10,000 hours is all it takes to make you a pro and whatever you play or create will not be any lesser in quality to the world's best. The rest is upto to you and how you go about making your fortunes in this world - being nice to others and being a good ethical person also helps!
If you are want to become a master music producer, based on the 10,000 hour theory, depending upon how many hours you put in every day, 8 hours a day (around 5 years), 4 hours a day (around 10 years) you should be able to become a master music producer capable of creating chart topping music within 5 years or even 10 years. I don't think 10 years is a long time especially given that you are naturally inclined to and have a great affinity for the world of music. Five or ten years later when you are surrounded by people wanting to work with you, you will thank yourself for reading this little article and starting on a journey to stardom and riches which otherwise you would still have been dreaming about!
